Bug bites are common during warmer months and are usually mild, but proper care can help reduce discomfort and prevent irritation. For most bites, start by gently washing the area with soap and water. A cold compress can help decrease swelling and itching.
Encourage children to avoid scratching, since broken skin can increase the risk of infection.
Keeping fingernails trimmed and cleaned and using age-appropriate anti-itch treatments recommended by your provider may also help.
Watch for signs that a bite may need medical attention, including increasing redness, swelling, drainage, fever, pain, or symptoms of an allergic reaction such as trouble breathing, facial swelling, or widespread hives.
If your child develops concerning symptoms after a bug bite, contact Steel City Pediatrics to discuss next steps or schedule an appointment.
